Henderson's, Edinburgh's famous vegetarian restaurant, was established in 1962 with the aim of serving delicious, wholesome food, using the best and freshest of ingredients, and all at affordable prices. Since then, the business has expanded and now comprises a counter service restaurant, bistro, deli, shop, artisan bakery and art gallery. Recently, it opened a new cafe with outdoor seating below St. John's Church which it is developing as a performance venue. Henderson's offers creative vegetarian cuisine using locally sourced, fair trade, organic and GM-free ingredients whenever possible. Dishes change daily depending on the availability of seasonal vegetables. Also offered are freshly squeezed juices, organic alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The restaurant also caters for vegans, those with certain food intolerances and those on special diets. Henderson's also offers a range of spaces for private hire for 20 to 200 people, all with onsite catering available. In addition, the company offers outside catering facilities for all occasions. Their artisan bakery makes traditional wholemeal, rye, spelt, pitta and sourdough breads as well as cakes and handmade oatcakes. These are supplied to restaurants and shops throughout Edinburgh and are sold at Farmers' Markets countrywide. They also form the basis of the range of sandwiches sold at Henderson's shop, along with pies, pastries, snacks and hot and cold meals. The shop also sells organic fruits and vegetables, fair trade teas, coffees and chocolates.
